Virginia International Raceway draws motorsport fans from across the East Coast and beyond. Whether you’re trackside for IMSA, MotoAmerica, HyperFest, or a PCA club day, finding the right place to stay makes a genuine difference in how the weekend feels. Chain hotels in the area fill fast, charge peak-weekend rates, and give you nothing but a bed.
The Laurel Hotel offers a different option: A boutique property in the charming Danville River District, about 30 minutes from the VIR main gate. This guide covers everything you need to know to plan your race weekend stay.
About Virginia International Raceway
VIR is one of the most celebrated road courses in North America. Set on 1,300 acres in Alton, Virginia — just across the Dan River from Danville — it hosts over 300 days of track activity per year, from major FIA and IMSA spectator events to PCA track days, SCCA competition weekends, and the annual HyperFest automotive festival.
For motorsport fans, VIR is a destination. The paddock is open, the sightlines are excellent, and the circuit’s geography — rolling hills, elevation changes, long straights — makes it one of the most visually spectacular tracks in the country.
Major annual spectator events include:
- IMSA WeatherTech Championship — Michelin GT Challenge (August)
- MotoAmerica Superbikes at VIR (August)
- SRO GT World Challenge (July)
- HyperFest — automotive lifestyle festival (April/May)
- HSR VIR Historics — vintage sportscar racing (September)
- VIR SpeedTour / SVRA (September)
- VIR Veterans Race of Remembrance (November)
- PCA HPDE & SCCA club events (March–November)
If you’re making the trip to any of these events, you need somewhere worth coming back to at the end of the day.
Why Stay in Danville?
VIR sits in rural Pittsylvania County. The track itself offers on-site camping, which is great for the full festival experience — but for those who want a real bed, a hot shower, and a proper meal, Danville is the answer. It’s the nearest city of any size to VIR, roughly 25–35 minutes depending on your route, and it has something that the area near the track simply doesn’t: character.
Danville’s Schoolfield district — once the home of the world’s largest denim mill — has been carefully redeveloped into a genuine destination. The Laurel Hotel anchors it. The River District, two miles away along the Dan River, has craft breweries, galleries, and independent restaurants. There’s a 13-mile Riverwalk trail, Caesars Virginia casino for evening entertainment, and enough of a food scene that you won’t be driving 40 minutes for dinner.
It’s a place that rewards staying over — not just sleeping over.
Practical Race Weekend Tips
Book Early
VIR race weekends — especially IMSA, MotoAmerica, and HyperFest — draw visitors from across the mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Accommodation in the Danville area sells out 6–10 weeks in advance for the biggest events. The Laurel, The Bee, and The Holbrook are no exception. If you have a specific event in mind, don’t wait.
Getting to VIR from Danville
The drive from Danville to VIR takes approximately 25–35 minutes via US-58 E. Parking at VIR is plentiful for spectator events but fills early on peak race days — plan to arrive at gate open if you want paddock access. There is no regular shuttle service from Danville; most guests drive.
What to Bring to VIR
- Earplugs or hearing protection — mandatory for your own comfort
- Sunscreen and a hat — the paddock and main spectator areas have limited shade
- Comfortable walking shoes — VIR’s grounds are extensive
- Cash for paddock vendors
- Camera with a zoom lens if you’re serious about photography
- A scanner if you want to follow race comms
Evening Options in Danville
After a day at the track, Danville has more going on than most first-time visitors expect:
- Schoolfield Restaurant — dinner at The Laurel, no drive required
- Ballad Brewing — craft beer in a renovated tobacco warehouse in the River District
- 2 Witches Winery & Brewery — Virginia’s first combined winery-brewery, on the Riverwalk
- Caesars Virginia — casino, shows, and dining, five minutes from The Laurel
- River District — independent restaurants and bars along the Dan River
