Our Story

Built in 1903, the Dan River Company Office Building served as the executive offices of the textile giant Dan River Mills for many decades. Based in Danville with divisions across the nation, Dan River Mills was a prominent manufacturer that made fabric for clothes and apparel from 1882 until 2006, and the Company Office Building was central to Dan River’s operations.
Once the strategic heart of Danville’s textile empire, the building stood as a symbol of innovation and prosperity. Today, it has been thoughtfully reimagined as The Laurel Hotel, offering 36 beautifully designed rooms, attentive service, and unmatched convenience. As the newest addition to the Danville Hotel Collection, The Laurel provides a refined, welcoming home away from home for every kind of traveler.

Dan River Mills & The Laurel History

1882

Riverside Cotton Mills Founded

Six local investors chartered Riverside Cotton Mills in Danville, using water power from the Dan River. This company would grow into Dan River Inc. and become the largest textile firm in the South.

1895

Dan River Power & Manufacturing Company Established

Five of the original founders formed a second company to develop waterpower on the Dan River, laying the groundwork for later expansion.

1903

Company Office Building Constructed

Dan River contracted Lockwood, Greene & Company to build the initial mill buildings in Schoolfield, including the Company Office Building—today home to The Laurel.

1909

Major Merger Forms Riverside & Dan River Cotton Mills

The Riverside Cotton Mills and Dan River Power & Manufacturing Company merged to become one of the century’s most important textile enterprises.

1946

Company Renamed Dan River Mills, Incorporated

Reflecting its regional and national prominence, the firm formally adopted the Dan River Mills name during the post-war era.

2006

Dan River Mills Closes and Mill Operations End

Global pressures and industry decline culminated in Dan River Mills shuttering its operations, closing the company’s historic Schoolfield facilities.

2020s

Revitalization & Reimagining of Dan River Sites

Historic Dan River Mills properties—including the former Company Office Building—have been redeveloped as part of the broader revitalization of Schoolfield Village. Caesars Virginia developed the former Schoolfield mill site, where the casino now stands. Ed Walker—owner and developer of the Danville Hotel Collection—preserved the former Company Office Building now The Laurel Hotel.
