Dan River Mills & The Laurel History
Riverside Cotton Mills Founded
Six local investors chartered Riverside Cotton Mills in Danville, using water power from the Dan River. This company would grow into Dan River Inc. and become the largest textile firm in the South.

Dan River Power & Manufacturing Company Established
Five of the original founders formed a second company to develop waterpower on the Dan River, laying the groundwork for later expansion.

Company Office Building Constructed
Dan River contracted Lockwood, Greene & Company to build the initial mill buildings in Schoolfield, including the Company Office Building—today home to The Laurel.

Historic Dan River Mills properties—including the former Company Office Building—have been redeveloped as part of the broader revitalization of Schoolfield Village. Caesars Virginia developed the former Schoolfield mill site, where the casino now stands. Ed Walker—owner and developer of the Danville Hotel Collection—preserved the former Company Office Building now The Laurel Hotel.
